On-demand STE(A)M Instruction for at home, in the classroom or on the road!

Exploring STEM through virtual demonstrations, lessons and activities from our Discovery Center Education Team. Our Virtual School Programs offer on demand, hands-on learning experiences supported by low-prep or prep-free, prerecorded (or live-zoom), standards-aligned instruction that exposes students and families to STEAM learning in the classroom, at home or on the road. Optional activity-kits for hands-on exploration are available for as little as $3/student!
How does it work?

Select from the paths below to find the best option for you.

Path 1:
  1. Choose a topic from our list of options.
  2. Watch the accompanying video on your own and with your student(s) any time you want!
  3. Make sure to check out the accompanying free, Educator Resource Guide that comes with each topic for further instructional inspiration.
  4. Email education@dcidaho.org and request additional instructional materials including: video slides, transcript & instructions/list of materials for support activity and ASL translated versions for hard of hearing.
Path 2:
  1. Choose a topic from our list of options.
  2. Watch the accompanying video on your own and with your student(s) any time you want.
  3. Consider adding on a hands-on activity kit (along with detailed instructions and pre-measured materials) for $3/student and enhance your students’ learning even further.
  4. Fill out the request form.
  5. Receive confirmation and materials from our Education team! Voila!
Path 3:
  1. Choose a topic from our list of options.
  2. Choose a day/time that you would like a Discovery Center Educator to lead your students in a 30-45 minute, live-zoom instructional session.
  3. Consider adding on a hands-on activity kit (along with detailed instructions and pre-measured materials) for $3/student and enhance your students’ learning even further.
  4. Fill out the request form.
  5. Receive confirmation and materials from our Education team, and Voila!

SLIME!

Explore concepts of materials science in an oozy, fun way with our new SLIME! exhibition. This highly interactive and tactile experience gives learners of all ages the opportunity to experiment with surface tension, viscosity, density, elasticity, vortices and even slime in nature! 

Matter Splatter

Matter Splatter offers a unique opportunity for students to dive into the world of material science and engineering. Exploring how scientists’ ability to understand, control and combine materials produce some of the most advanced technology in existence today! 

In this activity, students will turn milk into a moldable plastic by causing a chemical reaction that bonds protein molecules (casein) to create a polymer! 

TINKER THE T-REX

Did you know that fossils can tell stories? And Tinker — the most complete fossilized skeleton of a juvenile (or teenage) T. rex ever found — has plenty to share! What was life like for a young T. rex? How does the dinosaur era still impact us today? Imagine, experiment, and discover fun facts with the Discovery Center of Idaho and our resident T. rex, Tinker!
